Why I love Dogs For Autism, a service dog program...

Most of you know how much Dogs for Autism means to me. We had our annual holiday fundraiser last night where we debut this video.

Please take 10 minutes to watch so you will know what we do and why it means so very much to me. You can see McIver and Nikki and me in the video too, which is kinda fun. Dennis Quaid the actor is in it. You can see lots of training, temperament testing, interaction with children and tons of dogs (and people) having fun doing very important work.

  5. We live in the D.C. metro area where a non-speaking autistic 7-year-old boy was recently lost for 4 days in a national forest area. Can't help but think if he'd had a dog, he wouldn't have gotten lost at all, and if he had, he would have been found before he spent 3 nights alone in the forest. He was found, alive and safe, but it could have ended much differently. So good job, and keep it up!

  6. Oh my goodness - I don't think I could ever grasp how these intelligent dogs are to families with autistic children. What a lovely relationship to create and to have an extra set of eyes to watch.
Having a GSD myself, I know how alert, intuitive and intense the dogs are - Cheers!!

  7. Thanks for your comment Momma Heartbeat. I giggled at the "pet goldfish" comment. good for you for protecting her that way!

However, i ALWAYS bond more to females than i do to male dogs. it's odd. i don't know why. and despite juno "owning" Mr. WD in a alpha like way or "he's my human way" she is much more bonded to me in most ways. i think she just doesn't want him over-doing affection with Loki. she gets very jealous. and she gets jealous when strangers (or close friends of ours) give him attention to. she glares at them and they think "WTF is she glaring at me for?" and it's because she's jealous. But she won't EVER go out of her way to ask for attention, but she sure EXPECTS it. and as far as Mr. WD, she really covets him as hers for some reason. but over the two of us, she's bonded really close to me. if she's not holding a grudge on Mr. WD, she'll love being with him to. depends if he's wronged her or not. LOL. dogs are funny. he's always bonded to male dogs better too.

  8. also, keep at it with Lucy. She'll come around. especially with that special 1:1 time of a run with her. they always do when you do 1:1 bonding. it took me a while with Juno too, she didn't like me or Mr. WD, but she tolerated me more. Now she's just head over heels for me and Mr. WD as well, even tho she won't admit it! :)

  9. I used to work with autistic children and adults! Although, I can't say that they ever had any dogs in the program! But, I think it's a fabulous idea!

    Merry Christmas!
