Informative Post from Mamma

With all the "happenings" around here, I've been able to try a couple of new things and I thought I'd share them with you.

First of all, I think everyone is familiar with the traditional cone of doom. Below is McIver modeling. Having this cone in our home means we MUST put away all breakables. Additionally, for the safety of our knees, we must know where the cone (and canine) are at all times. Having 4 dogs means we feed in crates. This started when Lucy decided an invisible monster was going to steal her food and that there was ne'er a morsel in sight to replace it. Her growl sent everyone into a tailspin. But I digress...The cone of doom doesn't work in a crate.

And frankly, by the time it's possible to remove the cone of doom, it has glows of duct tape.
(And yes we live near Puddles...)

McIver looking like an olive in a martini glass.

So we decided to give this a try and we LOVE it. Nikki is now "Bubblehead" but she seems comfortable. She runs around the house and essentially bounces her noggin off the walls but it's better than the cone of doom!

We got a Large but it has a velcro strap that makes it adjustable. Because it is adustable we can use it for McIver and Calhoun if they ever need it. It has an inner tube, accessible via a zipper, that is inflatable and is protected by a durable rubber cover. It's also washable.

At Petsmart, it cost about $30 but is definitely reusable.

Above is the nail trimmer with the sensor. Obviously, I'd already taken the trimmers out.

It is battery operated. The batteries are provided and should last up to ten hours of use. They are just little watch-type batteries so easily replaceable.

Apparently the sensor can pick up blood which is how it detects the quick. It must work off some sort of mineral detection or something.

There is a red light, a yellow light and a green light to alert you as to the location that you are about to trim.

This one is for thick nails and cost $49.99 at Petsmart in the grooming isle. The one for smaller nails was about $30-35.

So far I give it two thumbs up!!
I hope this helps. Have a great day everyone!

  1. An inflatable cone of shame? Can Mom wear it on the airplane? Actually, it looks like a really good alternative. We just can't do the cone...:-)

  2. thanks for these reviews! I love the clippers. Now I just need someone insane enough to attempt to restrain Stumpy while I touch her toes.

  4. I love the idea of having a nail trimmer with sensor lights to warn the owner if he/she is about to clip the nail incorrectly. I've never heard of this type of trimmer and so now I will be on the lookout. It will come in handy when pet sitting clients ask us to clip their pet's nails.

  5. Last time Dex was in the cone of shame, I used the comfy cone. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=comfy+cone&wrapid=tlif12942412146791&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=11927079357891879655&ei=wY0kTf7uDISclgec4bi9AQ&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CDoQ8wIwAw#

It worked great. Dex was able to eat and drink with it on, but I usually took it off anyway. Plus Mango didn't think he was an alien being (as opposed to the classic cone which caused Mango to try and drive Dex off the property).

  6. That cone didn't work on me. I could still get around it to chew/lick my back leg.

  7. You sure that's not a lifejacket?? ;)

I will not let mom cut my nails, she has to let Dr. Vet do it. But Duncan does, maybe mom needs those fancy clippers for him?

  8. We used the soft cone the last time too, like Dexter had. But that was because Phantom's boo boo was on his face and he would be able to reach his face with the bubble one. But the Momster think sit would be a good idea to have one of those on hand too. We hope none of us ever has to test it out.

Thanks for the info on the nail clipper - Mom is terrified to try cutting our nails:)

  9. Riley, to use the vet's actual words to me, "flipped out" in a plastic cone they put her in when she had her nail removed back in October, so they took it off and I had to just watch her like a hawk to keep her from licking it. I don't think one of those inflatable collars would work with a front paw but if (I should say "when") she has hip or knee surgery they probably would work. I'll have to look into it.

Those Quick Finder nail clippers are really cool. I just clipped Riley's nails for the first time at home yesterday but just clipped the very ends off because I was afraid of cutting her quick. The Quick Finder seems really cool!

  10. That nail trimmer sounds pretty high tech! How cool!

We'll have to keep the inflatable cone in mind. Another good option sometimes is the Bite Not collar.

Thanks for sharing your cool finds!

P.S. Morgan says that she's very impressed with the scar and that she did not sit on the ice for too long!

  11. We has something similar called a soft e-collah but it duss not deflate - has foam inside to it always stays big and hard to put away. Mom had to get me one coz I turned into a canine Rambo with the hard cone of shame, rite into the back of her legs, BOL! But mom say she duss like the idea of the inflatabull one better. Now that nail trimmer, mebbe they has improved it but mom got two of them when they furst commed out a few years ago and HATED them. She tried on me ofur and ofur again coz I lay still and cooperate while she duss experimentashuns but she could not get them to werk rite. So if'n it werked fur you, mite be a noo and improved vershun.

  12. That nail trimmer is exactly the kind of thing I have been looking for. Since I don't have a PetSmart in my city, I will have to see if I can find it online. Thanks for the review!

  13. This WAS Most Informative! Thank you Heartbeat Momma. Luckily, none of us have had to wear a cone (chew on wood) but if we do, I'm gonna insist on that kind. And that nailclipper sounds like a toe-saver. Mom hardly takes any off when she clips ours cuz she's so nervous about hurting us. And, well, between you and me, Brudder Ranger is starting to look a little like that Howard Hughes guy.

  14. Mesa would use her cone like inmates use cups. She runs it along the bars of crates to make noise and annoy us till we take it off her

  18. Thanks for the reviews! Mama had not heard of the blood-sensing nail clippers; that sounds like a good idea. Those inflatable collars are nice for side & neck wounds; places a doggie can't easily reach to nibble. But for leg wounds [Jed's usual] or tail wounds, they just don't keep the tongue out of the wound. It's nice there's such a selection of Cones for assorted purposes. [HA! says Jed! A fiendish creation of the devil, all of them!]

Hopefully I won't need the cone but its REAL hard staying away from my bandage. Thanks for the info and I hope I don't the cone but if I do- mom will check out this one fer sure!
