We hosted dogs from ALL over the southeast for a weekend event. It was SO much fun and we are planning to do it again next year!

Maybe not... and a happy birthday headlock

You can skip the words and get to the bday if you want!!

So last time I wrote, my mother had been told she had Alzheimer's... now we aren't so sure!

We visited the neurologist yesterday and he had better news... sort of... I guess.

My brother and I went with my parents which was good because it became very evident that my father has become somewhat of a crutch for my mother. I also realized that my father is getting older and more emotional as well. I suppose now is the time that the tides start to change. The future will require my brother and I taking a much stronger role in our parents life.

I'm pretty sure that by the time we left, the neurologist wanted to give all of us a brain wave test! Although it was a very serious reason that we were there, my family still laughed and cut up which was very comforting. My father cried twice which sucks, then my brother or I would crack a joke. We were all there to support my mother and determine the plan of action.

We all agree there is an issue and the neurologist feels it is one of three things:

1. Multiple Sclerosis which normally presents before age 40 but also causes confusion and other brain issues. These days MS is treated very well with fantastic medications.

2. Primary Progressive Aphasia which usually presents in men but is rather uncommon in either gender. PPA is a form of dementia that, unlike Alzheimer's, only impacts the language center of the brain. Unfortunately, PPA is a progressive disease and is treated the same as Alzheimer's.

3. Multiple Strokes which originate in the heart. Her MRI scan is showing some clots on both sides of the brain. If the strokes started in an artery, then they would most likely be contained to one part or one side of the brain.

Testing for all of these issues will include:

A. more bloodwork
B. a spinal tap with results in 4 weeks
C. brain wave test
D. sonic ultrasound of the heart- basically they go down your throat and ping waves off of your heart
E. finally, if we get no definitive results, then we head up to Duke University Memory Disorder Clinic for a fancy PET scan

So all of that being said, I am so very thankful that my parents have decent healthcare and have lived a responsible, thrifty life and can have the very best of healthcare. Most people are not so lucky.

And FINALLY I want to wish Lucy the happiest of birthdays. She was about 8 months old when I rescued her goofy Boxer butt. So I decided that would put her birthday right around Valentines Day! So yesterday we celebrated Lucy's 5th Birthday with a headlock! She has been rescuing me everyday since I brought her wiggly self home!

Love you sweet Lucy!

Alzheimer's Sucks

My mom is 58 and has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. She will receive the results from her CT scan that she had yesterday. The scan was basically to rule out tumor or stroke. They expect to put her on medications today to slow the progression of the disease.

My father finally convinced her to get a physical by agreeing to one for himself. She told the nurse she was 39. My mother has been an elementary school art teacher for over 25 years. She taught me to be an independent woman even though my level of independence and outspokenness has offended her delicate southern sensibilities! She's always been the most caring mother and is now showing the same love and compassion to my brother's children, aged 18 months and 3. They ADORE their Mimi.

I don't know what to say or do right now so I'm doing what she always taught me to do, write. When I was mad at someone or frustrated about a situation, she taught me to write a letter with all my thoughts and then put it in a desk drawer. And voila! Suddenly I felt better!

Unfortunately I'm still not really sure how I feel right now. I think I'm angry that for a few years now I've not been able to have a normal conversation with my mother. She always seems lost or confused or addled.

I think I'm sad because I don't have children yet. Will my future children ever know their Mimi? Will my mom ever know them? When will my mom forget my name, my face? When will she forget our Christmases or our family vacations? Will she be angry? How will my dad handle this? How will this impact her physically? How does she feel right now knowing what is ahead of her?

The ONLY thing that I know right now for sure is that I LOVE my mother with all my heart. I am a fixer, a do-er and NOT a wallower. I will put my brave face on for my family. I will do anything and everything to help her and my dad. Because I worked in the medical field during grad school, I have many contacts and I've already called them all in. I need resources and information.

If any of you have experience with this awful disease and have advice, I need it. Now is the time.

Memories

Y'all may remember me talking about my grandfather breeding, raising and training clydesdales and belgians as I was growing up. He is my mother's father and we lived across the street. When a foal was born, we got the phone call, usually before school, to come see the new arrival.

We lived in the city limits but on the edge of town and on several acres between their property and my parents. He was often seen driving his team through the "neighborhood" in his green and yellow wagon.

I had the opportunity to visit the brewery in St. Louis but I didn't get to see Grant's Farm. The stables at the brewery were AMAZING! It gave me goose bumps being there. I probably would've cried at the Farm! LOL

Needless to say this commercial about killed me last night. Absolutely beautiful. A horse of that size in a full gallop is truly something to behold. It makes my heart sing!

Faith in Humanity: Restored

Mamma Heartbeat here. My morning commute is usually 30 minutes of highways, interstates and singing along with the radio. Today was a bit different. About 15 minutes in, traffic came to a stop and then a crawl, particularly in the left lane, so I huffed and got in the right lane and started to speed away. THEN I saw her, a terrified little red & white pit bull looking at every driver standing in the middle of the road. She was wearing a collar so I immediately pulled over and opened my door. She thought of jumping in and then ran to the median.

Normally, I have dog treats and a slip leash in my car. Of course, not today. By now a county deputy had pulled over and put his blue lights on. Two other people pulled over to help. Including some rough & tumble construction workers!

Traffic was basically stopped on both sides of the road. People were handing us lunches and dog treats to entice the scared little creature to safety. I got my hands on her but missed her collar!

By now another deputy with blue lights was on the scene. This lasted for about 30 minutes and the little, young female decided the highway was too scary and ran to the woods. We hung out for a bit longer but she never came back. I hope she decided the woods were safer until she can find her family again or they find her.

A deputy on the lookout for us.

Traffic at a standstill/ crawl on both sides.

In the end, we didn't catch her BUT I learned that humans still have good hearts and want to help. I was so shocked to see the kindness of strangers. A lot of people were probably late for work today (and with nothing to eat for lunch!) but that's ok. Not one horn was honked! It actually made me teary eyed!

Oh and to top it off, yesterdays local news was all about 2 pit bull maulings that left one woman dead and another in critical condition BUT people still wanted to help this little pibble.

Dog Mamma FAILURE!!

Well not much to report here. We've been so lazy lately as you'll see by the photos below. The weather here has been gray and sort of cold and kind of rainy-- basically coma inducing weather. The animals are happy cuddled up with me on the couch quite honestly. Dog Mamma Failure!!

Lucy: I've got a question. Can we be lazy some more?

McIver came to visit around Thanksgiving for about 10 days.  We did take a run but mostly snuggles.

Calhoun was anxiously awaiting our arrival at my parents house for Thanksgiving. Kind of creepy. We were at a stop light.

Lilly giving a neck massage to my boyfriend!

Lilly loving the remote control and Lucy loving her bone!

Calhoun: Dude, Harry, you are in my space. Harry: This is my mamma and I WILL lay on her.

So THAT is our exciting life and interactions...

We just wanted to wish all of our lovely Blogville furiends a very
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We love all of you very much.

Husky needs a home!

My dear friend, Julie, rescued this guy the other day. He is living in our Dogs for Autism kennels with several German Shepherds. Julie has years of training under her belt and really likes this guy but he really needs a proper forever home. Below is her description and some pictures.

Neutered male, under 1 year old. Red and white. Has been very gentle with all people and all animals so far. No microchip. I found him on the road trying to get killed in traffic. He had a ratty collar on and apparently had been tied up with a wad of hay twine that he'd broken loose from and gotten away. He was skin & bones--and very worried that somebody was going to be mean to him--submissive crouching, etc. I would guess his age at about 10 months, based on the incomplete state of his molars.
We have been calling him Juneau.

Please share with anyone you can think of. This boy needs a home!

EMERGENCY! EMERGENCY!!

This little lady needs a home. She is 4 years old. Her Daddy passed away last night.

She has AMAZING manners. She sits, shakes and takes treats VERY gently. NO jumping.

She is literally a doll. They say she is full Aussie but I see a lot of Golden in her as well.

I also think she would be very successful with agility.

We are in the Greenville SC area.

Most of us have maxed out on pets in our homes. If my life were a little different right now, I would take her in a skinny minute!

Our Recent Shenanigans

So you wanna know what we've been doing?

We've been sitting on Mamma watching TV. Poor Mamma can't see through me!!

We've been watching TV together & resting.

Lucy hurt her paw so that's why we are resting so much.  Mamma says she's a very good patient though.

She keeps her pink bootie on when necessary. And yes- that is DUCT TAPE keeping it on.

In an effort to cheer Lucy up, Mamma invited some friends over. Lucy forgets her manners but they don't care.

In fact, the Mamma's best friend just takes off her glasses to allow Lucy maximum licking.

So that's what we've been doing!!

Mamma's Gift

I know the suspense is killing you so here we go...

I cannot believe we kept this surprise a secret for like almost a whole day. Lucy & I knew just what Mamma wanted- her being from backwoods SC anyway. We kept it in the backyard until she went out to collect our toys. We watched out the door as it came into her view. She was so excited she about jumped out of her skin! She hollered and danced. We just know Puddles heard her across the 'hood.

And this is what Mamma saw...

OMD OMD OMD!!! Can you believe it?!? WE got us a possum!! Puddles, are you proud? We do our part for neighborhood watch!!

I'm just thinking about some possum pizza. Yummy!! Or maybe we should get the crock pot out? We could have a tailgate party this weekend?

Mamma did you like your pressie?

Mamma Heartbeat here. My little precious perfect angels were just exhausted after their mighty hunt. I can't tell if it got rained on or if they tried to lick it back alive for another play session.

While I didn't use salad tongs, I did pick the damn thing up with shovel and sling it over the fence. What should I do with this thing seriously? Do I need to bury it? I'm hoping it was just playing possum and will wake up and walk away!

OMD, OMD!!!

Mamma just returned home from Atlanta & you'll never guess what pressie we got her while she was gone!!!!

We'll post ALL about it tomorrow because Mamma says she needs time to process the whole thing!

She is THAT excited about it. Oh boy! I can't wait to tell you all about it!!

Wiggles,

Calhoun

Missing Mango

Mamma, Lucy and I are so very sad. Though we'd never met, I always felt a kindred spirit with my slobbery, jowl-y, relentlessly huge friend. We share crazy mamma's, silly siblings and the same general outlook on life. We were super good with the ladies, too. Lucy liked his studly ways. And Mamma? Well Mamma has a big heart for the big, lovable guys which is why she loves me so much. Mamma is terribly heartbroken for Mango Mamma. She is very leaky in her eyes.

It truly is a very sad day in Blogville.

Run free sweet Mango.

POTP is working in an amazing way

On this September 11, my city is praying for one of our own. As detailed in the previous post, one of our longtime firemen had a stroke while on vacation in Mexico. I reached out yesterday and asked all of you for the POTP since he loves dogs, especially our city fire dog, Lola. He is her daddy actually. Together they provide fire prevention & safety education to our youngest citizens.

As usual, the POTP is working. Originally we heard that it might be a month before he came out of the medically induced coma. Well guess what, he's opened his eyes and is making amazing strides.

He still has a long way to go but his family is feeling so much hope.

He has a caring bridge site so if you'd care to read the story, it will make you realize what an amazing  country we have.

Feel free to leave a comment and tell them Lola sent you... :-)

POTP Needed

This is really about a fireman who works for the same city that I work for. He was on a cruise in Mexico with his family and had a stroke. The POTP qualifier is that he was our firedog handler. He and Lola have been together a long time.

Explaining fire & safety prevention to children. Oct 2011

The stroke was in the front part of his brain that impacts speech and motor skills. He is in a drug-induced coma. He returned back to our area Friday while many members of the fire department waited at the municipal airport. He is a much loved employee. Recently, he and Lola have been running and have both lost weight!

Lola is having a very hard time. She used to crawl in bed with her mom & dad and wake up together. Now she crawls in bed with her mom and puts her head under her daddy's pillow and cried. As soon as he is moved out of ICU, Lola's official title will no longer be firedog but therapy dog. She will be able to be with her daddy everyday until he gets better.

We need POTP for Mr. G, Lola and their family.
